The Cheapest Way to Get to Heathrow Airport from London

1. The London Underground – Cheap as Crisps

  • Cost: Around £5.60 (contactless)
  • Duration: 50-60 minutes (depending on your starting station)
  • Check Ahead: Visit the London Underground’s single fair finder to check the current cost from your station before you go.

The Piccadilly Line is the hero we don’t deserve. It runs directly to Heathrow terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. No messing about with connections. Just hop on and let the soothing blue seats carry you to the airport.

It’s not glamorous. The seats are stiff and you’ll almost certainly end up pressed against someone’s suitcase. But for the price, it’s unbeatable.

Plus, trains run every ten minutes or so, even at unsociable hours.

Top Tip: Travel off-peak to save a few pounds. Peak hours (06:30 – 09:30 and 16:00 – 19:00) mean higher prices, more crowds and the occasional elbow joust.

2. The Elizabeth Line – Reliable and Affordable

  • Cost: From £12.80 (contactless)
  • Duration: 30 minutes from Paddington

The Elizabeth Line is the queen of London’s trains. Smooth, efficient and always on time (well, by UK standards).

It’s pricier than the Tube, but much faster. You’ll get air-conditioned carriages, luggage racks and fewer stops, making it a strong contender if you’re short on time.

Trains run every 30 minutes, connecting Central London to Heathrow in a flash. And it’s cheaper than the Heathrow Express. Speaking of which….

3. Heathrow Express – Quick but Pricey

  • Cost: £25 (on-the-day fare) or £32 first-class
  • Duration: 15 minutes from Paddington

If budget isn’t a concern or you have an urgent meeting with duty-free, the Heathrow Express is the fastest way to the airport. The journey’s short and sweet, with no stops to ruin your vibe.

But here’s the catch – its relative expense, compared to the other options.

For the super-prepared among us, advance tickets can drop as low as £5.50. But if you’re booking last-minute, you’ll be paying roughly four times the cost of the tube to arrive at the same destination.

4. National Express Coaches – Budget Bus Bliss

  • Cost: From £8.80 one-way
  • Duration: Around one hour

National Express coaches connect Heathrow to several London locations, including Victoria Coach Station and Hammersmith.

It’s slower than the tube, but you’re guaranteed a seat. Plus, the luggage space is generous – perfect for over-packers.

Keep an eye on the timetable, though. Coaches don’t run as frequently as trains and a missed bus could mean an expensive taxi.

5. Ride-Sharing Apps – An Affordable Taxi Alternative

  • Cost: From around £35
  • Duration: 45-90 minutes (traffic-dependent)

If you’re traveling with friends or a ridiculous amount of luggage, ride-sharing apps, such as Uber and Lyft, can be surprisingly cost-effective.

Split the fare and suddenly it’s cheaper than the Express.

The downside? London traffic is a cruel mistress. Plan for delays and always leave earlier than you think you need to.
